UNTE STATES PATENT OFIGE.
JAMES A. ORDREY AND HANCIL CORDREY, OF SAN DIEGO, CALFORNIA.
SAW-CLAMP.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
Application led June 3, 1915. Serial No. 31,814.
To all whom t may conce-rn:
Be it known that we, JAMES A. CORDREY and HANCIL CORDREY, citizens of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a saw clamp for holding a hand saw for iiling, setting and the like.
The objects of our invention are first, to provide a saw clamp of this character which is light and may be folded into a compact form so that it may be easily stored in a tool chest for use by carpenters; second, to provide a saw clamp of this class which is readily attached to and detached from a work bench, table, etc.; third, to provide a saw clamp of this character in which the clamping parts are removable so that they may be readily changed and are sufficiently elastic to conform to the sawvblade thus preventing the rattle of the blade when filing; fourth, to provide a saw clamp that is simple and economical of construction, durable and does not readily get out of order.
Vith these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, our invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1, is a side elevational view of our clamp, shown folded into a compact form, Fig. 2, is aside elevational view of the same shown ready for use, and Fig. 3, is an end view thereof shown mounted on a bench.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The clamp pieces 1 and 2, an le bars 3 and 1, ells 5 and 6, foldablelug vertical supports 8 and 9, pivotal connections 10 and wing screw 11 constitute the principal parts of our saw clamp.
The clamp pieces 1 and 2 are preferably made of wood and are of sufficient length to support an ordinary or conventional saw blade and are supported in the angle bars 3 and 4 and secured thereto by means of,
screws 3a. These angle bars 3 and A are practically the same length as the pieces 1 and 2. These' angle bars 3 and l are rigidly secured to the ell pieces 5 and 6 by means of rivets 5a and 6a. These ell pieces 5 and 6 are pivotally mounted on the supports 8 and 9 by means of the rivet 8a and bolt 9a. The bolt 9 is provided with a thumb nut 9b for adjusting the relative positions of the clamp pieces 1 and 2 when `they are out in the position for use as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. Pivotally mounted on the angle bar 3, near each end thereof, are the lugs 7 which are provided with downwardly projecting points 7a adapted to be inserted in the top of a bench, table and the like for holding the clamp thereon. The lower end of the support 8 is provided with a hole adapted for a screw 8b to be used in case it is desired to secure the clamp more rigidly to the bench or table. In the lower end of the support 9 is provided the wing screw 11 which is screwed into the lower end thereof and its end adapted to press against the lower end of the support 8 for pressing the clamp pieces 1 and 2 together or releasing the same. These Supports 8 and 9 are pivotally secured together by means of the pivotal connections 10, one onfeach side, which are attached to said supports by means of the rivers 10a.
Though we have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts, we do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the purview of our invention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims. It is obvious that with this construction, there is provided a saw clamp which. is adjustable and foldable throughout; that it may be readily secured to a bench or table by means of the pivoted lug 7 and, if it is desired to more rigidly secure it by means of the screw 8", it can be rigidly secured to the bench or table; that the clamp pieces 1 and 2 may be readily adjusted into certain relative positions to each other by means of the thumb nut 9b; that these pieces 1 and 2, being removable and to a certain extent elastic, provides for a good t all along the saw blade; that the wing screw l1 provides substantial and novel means for operating the clamp and that the device as 110 a whole is simpleand economical of construction and durable.
Having thus describedv our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a saw clamp, the combination of a normally vertical support, an ell pivotally mounted on said support, an angle bar rigidly secured to said ell and adapted to eXtend normally at right angles to said support, lugs pivotally secured to said angle bar for securing said support to a bench or table, a movable support pivotally mounted relatively to-said first mentioned support intermediate the ends of said support, a wing screw screwed into said movable support and its inner end engaging with said other support for moving the opposite ends of said supports toward each other, an ell pivotally mounted on said movable support, means for rigidly securing said ell to said movable support, an angle bar rigidly secured on said ell and removable clamp pieces secured to said angle bars.
2. In a saw clamp, the combination of a normally vertical support, an angle bar pivotally mounted on said support adapted to extend normally at right angles to said support, lugs pivotally secured to said angle bar for securing said support to a bench or table, a movable support pivotally mounted relatively to said irst mentioned support intermediate the ends' of said support, a wing screw screwed into said movable support and its inner end engaging with said other support for moving the opposite ends of said supports toward each other, an angle bar pivotally mounted on said movable support, means for rigidly securing said angle bar to said movable support and removable clamp pieces secured to said angle bars.
3. In a saw clamp the combination of a normally vertical support, a jaw member pivotally mounted on said support adapted to extend normally at right angles to said support but adapted to fold against the .said support, lugs pivotally secured to said jaw member for securing said support to a bench or table, a movable support pivotally mounted relatively to said rst mentioned support intermediate the ends of said latter support, a wing screw screwed into said movable support and its inner end engaging with said other support for moving the opposite ends of said supports toward each other, another aw member pivotally mounted on said movable support, removable clamp pieces secured to said jaw members and means for rigidly securing said other jaw member to said movable support.
l. In a saw clamp, the combination oi' a pair of normally vertical supports, means for pivotally connecting them together intermediate their ends, jaws normally at right angles thereto pivotally secured thereto, whereby said jaws may be folded against said supports, removable clamp pieces secured to said jaws and means in connection with one of said supports and one of said jaws for rigidly and adjustably securing one of said jaws to one of said supports, whereby said latter jaw may be secured in various adjusted positions relatively to said support.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands at San Diego, California, this 28th day of May, 1915.
JAMES A. CORDREY. HANCIL CORDREY.
