COASTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1918.
Application filed May 31, 1916. Serial No. 100,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER F. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coasters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a coaster and particularly pertains to a small portable vehicle used bychildren for coastin upon grades and to convey them from p ace to place.
It is an object of this invention to provide a light, portable vehicle u on which a person may stand and by whic he may be carried.
Another ob'ect is to provide treadle means whereby the device may be set in motion by the movement of the feet when it is not mov ing on a grade.
Another object is to provide means whereby the movement of the foot treadles will act.
to impel the vehicle in a forward direction irrespective of which treadle is moved.
It is another object to provide a propelling, mechanism in connection with the treadle members which will run idle and not interfere with the forward movement of the vehicle when the foot treadles are held against movement and thus allow the vehicle to coast when suflicient momentum has been obtained.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple clutch mechanism which is operated in connection with the foot treadles to rotate the driving gear of the vehicle and which will run idle when the driving ear is rotated by other forces than that of t e propelling mechanism.
Another Ob]BCt of this invention is to provide a suitable steering means which also forms a substantial member for steadying the rider standing upon the vehicle.
Another object is to provide a simple power transmission member adapted to connect the foot treadles with the driving clutch, said member being simple in design and not easily made inoperative.
It is a further object to provide a coaster which is substantial in its construction and of few simply constructed movable parts which ma be readil maintained in an operative con ition by t e ordinary youth.
Oth r o jec s w ll appear hereinafter.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating the device as assembled for use and showing the steering column as broken away for the sake of convenience.
Fig. 2 is a view in plan of the coaster as shown in Fig. l and illustrates the relation between the foot treadles and the power transmission mechanism of the device.
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation with parts shown in vertical section to illustrate the clutch arrangement of the rear axle.
F 1g. 4 is a view in vertical section through the power transmission and the driving axle of the coaster as. seen on the line 4-4- of Fig. 3 and in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referringto the drawings more particularly, 10 indicates a horizontally disposed floor board beneath which is a running gear comprising a single front steering wheel 11 and a pair of oppositely arranged driving wheels 12 and 13 positioned in a suitable manner, to be hereafter described, beneath the rear end of the floor board. The front steering wheel is provided with a Wheel fork composed of a pair of vertically ext-ending fork members 14 and 15 which are secured to a steering post 16 by means of suitable screws 17. The steering post 16 is here shown as constructed of wood and extending upwardly a considerable distance above the line of the floor 10. A pair of handle bars 18 are rigidly secured adjacent the upper terminating end of the steering column and provide means for the steering wheel 11 to be turned upon its pivot pin 19 which is secured to the steermg column by means of a U-shaped bracket 20. The bracket 20 has bearing lugs 21 and 22 formed at its ends and in vertical relation to each other. The pivot pin 19 secures the bracket and its steering gear to the floor board of the vehicle b means of a lower bracket member 23 suite. 1 fastened to the floor board and an upper bracket and reinforcing member 24: which is secured over the top of a treadle pivot block 25. The member 24 extends diagonally downward to the fioor board where it is secured by a suitable bolt 26.
The treadle ivot block is secured by means of bolts 2 to the forward end of the floor 10 and extends upwardly in a vertical manner. A treadle pivot pin 28 is horizontally disposed and positloned through the upper end of the pivot block and is adapted'to engage the piv'otends 29 and 30 of the treadlcs 31'and32 The pivot ends 29 and 30 are a part of trundle li'itliiu men bers 33 and 34 arcuutely lore-led in swee 'i' downwardly and then continue ih oughout the feet of the rider, and allow him to stand' thereupon while operating and riding upon the coaster.
Reference being bad to Fig. 4 of the draw ing, it will be observed that the rear driving wheels 12 and 13 are mounted to rotate with the driving axle 4O suitably secured to the footboard 10 by means of a bearingmember 41 provided with a pair of oppositely dis posed downwardly extending axle supports 42 and- 43. The bearing member 41 is mounted upon-the foot-board by bolts 44. The axle 40 extends horizontally between the rear wheels 12 and-Band is formed-shits outer ends withthreaded portions 45 adapted to be engaged by suitable nuts which rigidly hold the wheels against shoulders 46 of the-cylindrical axle ends 47 and48. The axle portions 47 and 48 extend to a point adjacent the center of the axle where a ratchet member 49 of an enlarged diameter is mounted. The ratchet member is formed with a series of longitudinally extending teeth member 50 which have a radial face and a tapering back leading to the lowermost edge of the tooth face adjacent. It will be noted that the straight radial faces are'dis posed toward'the rear of the coaster as they pass'aroundandover their axialpoiht. The ratchet member 49 is of sufiicient'width to be partially'encompassed by the enlarged portionofa pair of driving sleeves 51 and 52 which are adapted to bear upon the cylindrical axle portions 47 and 48 and rotate therearound. A pair of pawls 53 and 54 are pivotally secured With'in'the enlarged portions of each ofthe sleeves and are adapted to normally abut against theradial faces of the teth50 being there held by means of spring members 55. "It \vill'thus be seen that when either of the sleeves is rotated in the dimetion indicated by the arrow-a,theratchet teeth will be engaged and the axle with its drivingwvheels' willbe rotated to move the vehicle in a forward'direction.
As a means of'transmittingtlie movement of the foot treadles 37 and 38 to the rear axle andthere'by rotate it, an endless cable 56 has been provided which is suitably cla'i'nped' against'thc rear terminating ends of the treadle frames by clamping straps 57 and 58 which are held by bolts 59. Theendless cahlc'htj'is' protide dw'ith'a pair of horizontally disposed grooi'e'd" idler pulleys (it) and til rotalubly mounted at the upper end :u'i d u'ilhin a U-shaped transmission case 31% which extends vertically from the foot-board lt iind is tl'iere secured by meansohboits (53'.
The 'en'dlesseable 56 is led dou'nwardly from the opposite outer sides the pulleys no and (31 and is ledaroundthe'sleeveidembers 51 and 52 WlliClttlb rotatably mounted upon thedrivin 'axl'el' After having been led aroundthesleetes a sufficient number-of turns to correspond in" circumferential. le'ngth to uietiea'dl movement, thembie is passed throughclanlping bosses'dfi and'there held by'means of set screws 66. Anotlier portion of the "cable'is th'efi'led afour'i'd'the sleeye and upwardly over" a centrally dis osed idler wheat- 67. Examination of' the" driving cable 56 as particularly shown-in Figs-4 0i thediawihg'f-will enclose-the fact that the cable 'is positional and arranged in lel utibn" td' its neadie iii'ii'lltiis 'alid the rear axle so that an up and down movementof enemies-(11s w'ill' act to rotate "one of the sleeves-in"airadvaneddireetim and thereby cause" its pain members tdengag' the "(it-iv ing ratchet and rotate the driving axle.
