C. .l. DOTY.
CHALK HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 28.191]- 1,260,881. Patented Mar.26,1918.
CLARENCE JOHN DOTY, 0F COLE, SOUTH DAKOTA.
. CHALK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 191@.
' Application filed July 28, 1917. Serial No. 183,296.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE J OIIN DOTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cole, in the county of Perkins and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to chalk and crayon holders and the primary obj ectof the invention is to provide means forholding the crayon or chalk so as to provide a guard for the same and thus prevent the chalk or crayon from becoming easily broken.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for holding a piece of chalk or crayon wherein the chalk or crayon can be readily adjusted outwardly from one end of the holder as the same is used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chalk holder of the above character which is durable and eflicient in use, simple and easy to manufacture and can be readily placed upon the market at a reasonable price.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof in which Figure 1 .is a longitudinal sectional view through the improved chalk holder showing the chalk in position,
Fig.2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View through a modified form of the chalk holder, and
Fig. 4 is a detail transversely sectional view through the modified form of the chalk holder taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates the improved device which includes the cylindrical tube or-barrel 2 rigidly carrying at its inner end the nut 3 which is internally screw threaded as at 4. Aplurality of leaf springs 6 which are sinuously formed so as to frietionally engage the chalk or crayon 7 are secured at their outer ends as at 5.
A cylindrical casing 8 is adapted to slidably receive the barrel 2 and the same has its outer end closed by the end Wall 9. A follower 10 is arranged centrally of-the casing and extends slightly beyond the open end thereof and has this end enlarged and flattened as at 11 to form means for engaging the inner end of the chalk 7 and the same is externally screw threaded as at 12 and is adapted to threadedly engage in the bore of the nut 3. The follower has an enlarged head 13 on its outer end, which is rigidly secured to the outer surface of the end wall 9, so that when the outer casing is turned in one direction the follower will thread into the nut 3 which will cause the same to move inward and ush the chalk 7 outward and thus adjust t e same.
In Fig. 3 a slightly modified form of invention 1s shown and in this form the sinuously formed springs 6 are soldered or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the barrel 2 at the outer end thereof-as at let and the nut 3 is entirely dispensed with. The barrel 2 in this form has its outer end externally screw threaded as at 15 and is adapted-to be received in the outer casing 8 which is internally screw threaded as at 16, so that upon rotation of the outer casing in one direction the same will thread along the barrel 2 and push the follower 10, which is formed with its outer surface smooth,,and above the chalk outward.
A rubber guard 16 having internal threads 17 is threaded on the outer end of the barrel 2 and forms a means for preventing'the metallic edge of the barrel from coming in contact with the blackboard and scraping the same. The rubber guard 16 has an inwardly extending flange 18, which is adapted to frietionally engage the chalk and hold the same in correct position.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical, yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary,
I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
What I claim as new is A chalk or crayon holder comprising a 5 cylindrical barrel, leaf springs extending the length of the barrel and secured to the inner surface thereof, said leaf springs being sinuously formed so as to frictionally en age a piece of chalk to hold the same in the arrel, 10 a tubular casing adapted to receive said barrel, and means carried hy'said tubular casing for adjusting said piece of chalk outward of the barrel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE JOHN DOTY.
