use in connection with pipes or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and ii'nproved means whereby an effective grip may be had uponthe work.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character including a pivoted jaw and a co-acting sliding jaw together with means for c0nstantly urging the sliding jaw toward the pivoted jaw.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangen'ient of the several. parts of my improved wrench wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use,
as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 1 denotes an elongated shank having one end portion enlarged as at 2 to afford a lateral extension and wherein said lateral extension is provided with a bore 3 disposed longitudinally of the shank 1. The opposite end portion of the shank 1 has an edge thereof provided with the longitudinally disposed ratchet teeth 4.
(lo-acting with the end portion of the shank l swinging jaw 5 form and having 6 provided with a,

inclined toothed face it;
provided with the The jaw 11 is adapted to co-act with the foot 9 of the j aw 5 to effect the reqiinsite engagement upon a pipe or other work.
The outer end cent the inclined lateral extension portion of the jaw 11 adjawall 15 is provided with a 1( provlded in its outer end with a recess 18 as indicated by dotted which sald lines and in of a rod 19,
extends an end portion rod 19 being pivotally held within said recess 18 through the medium of the pin 20. tion of the rod 19 is The opposite end porslidably engaged within the bore 3 of the lateral extension 2 hereinbefore referred to and interposed between the inner end of the lateral extension 2 and the outer end of th pansible member conventional 001i e extension 17 is an 21 herein disclosed as a spring The member 21 encircling the rod serves to constantly urge the jaw toward the rocking jaw 5 so that an effective jaws 5 and 11 upon assured. It will. als ing the workii'ig gripping action of the a pipe or other work is o be perceived that duroperation the expansible member 21 will cause to automatically dis-- engage the teeth -11- and 14; upon a return stroke of the shank 1. The portion of the shank 1 extending within the recess 7 of the swinging aw 5 is provided with a lateral extension 21 having its periphery con centric to the pin 8. The extension 21 snugly fits within the'inner portion of the structed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the conven ence and facility with which it may be assembled and ope ated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without niaterially departing from the appearance and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown .in carrying out my invention in practice eX- cept as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: A pipe wrench comprising a shank, a 1 aw pivotally engaged with an end portion of the shank, a slidable jaw mounted upon the r shank and eo-acting with the pivoted jaw, opposed walls of the bore of the sliding jaw being in divergence, the inner end portion of one of said opposed walls being provided with teeth, the adjacent face of the shank being provided with teeth adapted to interlock with the first named teeth, a lateral extension carried by the shank at a point remote from the pivoted jaw, said lateral extension being provided with a bore, a rod pivotally engaged with the outer end of the sliding jaw and extending within the bore of the lateral extension of the. shank. and a spring encircling the. rod and interposml between the outer end of the slidingjaw and the inner end of the lateral extension.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
