A. T. SBRRELL. APPARATUS FOR CUTTING BUTTER. APPLICATION FILED [A130, 1914.

APPARATUS FOR CUTTING BUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ,N ov. 17, 1914.
1 Application filed March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,346.
T all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED T. SERRELL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Yonkers, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cutting Butter, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device which is adapted to cut from the ordinary cylinders of butter, cheese, etc., as the same exist in their incloslng tubs, sectors of desired masses and weights, and for this purpose it consists of two members hinged together at one of their ends, each member having an edge, ad acent to such hinged end, sharpened to form a cutter, and of an arc-shaped link connected to one of the said members and to which the other member is adapted to be clamped at var ous points, whereby the sector formed by such members may be varied, and it further consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts of which it is composed as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by corresponding marks of reference,--Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, showing in full lines its application to a tub of butter having one diameter, and in dotted lines its application to a tub having a smaller diameter. Fig. 3 is a section showing the adjustable clamp for the blade and link. Fig. 4 is a detail of an adjustable connection which may be used between the link and the blade by which it is carried.
The two blades A and B are each in the shape of a parallelogram, each having its lower edge, a and b, respectively, sharpened, and are connected at one of their ends by the pivot pin C, passing through hinged knuckles formed upon the blades. Each blade is moreover provided with a suitable U-handle D, by which it may be forced downwardly into the butter, and removed therefrom. The blade B has projecting from the outer side thereof near its outer end, an ear B preferably formed integral with the blade by bending the metal of the latter over at its upper edge, and to such ear is pivoted one end of an arc-shaped link E which has a series of holes e formed therein at intervals, the holes being connected by a central slot 6 of less width than the diameter of the holes. The blade A has proectmg from its outer side an ear A formed in the same manner as the ear B and having the same relative position upon the blade- A as the ear B has on the blade B, and through such ear, and through the arced link passes a locking pin F. This pin comprises a lower head f, a body portion 1, and a reduced stem portion f having, when the parts are. assembled, a head-washer f' fastened thereon in any suitable manner as by up-setting the metal of the stem. In the normal position of the parts, the body portion f is held within a perforation in the ear A, and 1n one of the holes e of the link E by means of a spiral spring G, which encircles the stem portion 7, and is held between the upper face of the link e, and the lower face of the head-washer, the diameter of body portion f being such that it will not pass through the slot e of the link. The blades thus held are fixed in angular relat on to each other. However, upon depressing the pin F, the reduced stem f will bebrought into the holes a of the link, and as such stem-portion has a diameter so small as to permit it to pass along the slot 6' in the link, the blades may be shifted to and from each other and locked in a desired position by again releasing this pin. The arced link is, by preference, graduated opposite the several holes therein to indicate the weight of the sector of butter, or other commodity, of its respective average densitv and given thickness, which will be cut by the blades when the pin f is in the corresponding hole. However, to permit correct indication of weight with variable density of material, the arced link is, by preference formed in two pieces having a sliding length-wise adjustment upon each other as is shown in Fig. 4, the two pieces being adapted to be clamped together when adjusted, by means of a clamp-screw H.
Inasmuch as the tubs used for packing butter or cheese vary within certain limits in diameter, I, by preference, make the length of the blades equal to the diameter of the smallest standard-sized tub with which such blades are to be used, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. With this relation of the parts. the contents of the tub will be cut into a series of sectors, while if the tub is of greater diameter, the use of the blades of the slightly less diameter, results I-claixn, and desire o secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device o the combination I gether at their meeting edges, a link carried by one of the blades, and means for adthe character described,
, iixilsjtxably connecting the other blade "to the at -various"\p oints -a'lon g the length thereof. e
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with two pivoted blades "f two blades hinged to-' hinged together at one end and provided with cuttin edges adjacent to the hin 'ed end, of hen es carried by the opposite edge of the blade, a link pivoted to one blade and having fa series of holes therein connected by as ot, and a locking pin mounted on the other blade and having a body portionlarger than the slot, and a stem-portion smaller than the slot, and means for nor mally holding the body portion of the pin in the holes in the link.
' In testimony whereof I hereunto 'afiix mysignaturein the presence of two witnesses." v ALFRED T. SERRELL." Witnesses J. J. EyroN, Jom: Cross.
