Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed October 21, 1912. Serial No. 726,884.
To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, EDWARD NIOKLAS Bnnrrnnc, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marquette city, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, rave invented certain new and useful improvements in Ships, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to water craft and it has special reference to such sailing vessels as are provided with propellers and driving motors.
The object of my invention is to provide a wind mill attachment for vessels of the character above indicated which shall serve the double purpose of an auxiliary sail and as a suitable driving means for an electric generator.
Other objects will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sailing vessel equipped with my invention and Fig. 2 is a partially sectional elevation of the propelling mechanism embodying the attachment of my invention together with a diagram of the electrical circuits.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in both of the figures.
Referring to the drawings, represents the hull of a sailing vessel having a mast 11, a main sail 12,'foresails 13 and a wind mill attachment 20. The vessel is further provided with a propeller 40 secured to a propeller shaft 41, an internal combustion engine 42, which may be replaced by any suitable driving motor, a driving shaft 48, and a clutch 44, by which an operative connection may be established between the shafts 41 and 43. A dynamo electric machine 50, which may be operated either as a motor or a generator, is interposed between the engine 42 and the clutch 44 and comprises a hollow shaft or quill 51 which loosely surrounds and is substantially coaxial with the shaft 43, an armature 52, a commutator cylinder having brushes 54 and 55, and a stationary frame 56, having bearings 57, in which the hollow shaft or quill 51 is supported, and polar projections 58. The machine is further provided with the usual field magnet windings 59 having a regulating resistance 59*, connected in shunt circuit relation to the armature.
The wind mill attachment comprises a wind wheel 21- aifixed to a short shaft 22 which is rotatively supported in a suitable bearing near the upper end of a column or tube 23, a base or standard 24 in which the column or tube :3 is adjustably supported, a vertical transmission shaft 25 and two sets of bevel gears 26 and 27.
The clutch 30 is interposed between one of the bevel gears of the set 27 and the hollow motor shaft 51. Another clutch is interposed between the opposite end of the hollow motor shaft and the driving shaft 43 of the engine.
The equipment of the vessel further comprises a storage battery 60, a plurality of control switches 61, 62 and 63, and a lightlng circuit 64, 65, across which a plurality of lamps 66 are connected.
The lower end of the tube or column 23 extends into the hollow cylindrical upper end of the base 24 which forms a journal in which the column may be adjusted, the thrust produced by the weight of the column being taken by a flange 28. The shaft 25 is co-axial with the column and the arrangement of the bevel gears 26 and 2'7 is such as to permit the rotative adjustment of the entire column without disturbing the driving connection between the wind wheel and the bevel gears 27. Vhen the column is adjusted to a desired position, it may be fixed by a set screw 29 which is screwed through a tapped hole in the base 24 and engages the lower end of the column.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: Assuming that the vessel is operating under stiff breeze, the position of the wind wheel 21 is preferably adjusted as shown in Fig. 1 to receive the full force of the wind thereby not only acting as a sail to assist in propelling the vessel, but also producing a rotation of the transmission shaft 25. If the storage battery is charged, the wind wheel may be held stationary and thus rendered more effective as a sail. If the storage battery is more or less discharged the clutch 30 may be actuated and an operative driving connection thereby produced between the wind wheel and the armature of the dynamo electric machine 50. It is then only necessary to close the witch 61 to establish a battery charging circuit from brush 54 of the dynamo electrio machine, which is now acting as a generator. through a conductor 70, one pole of the switch 61 and conductor 71 to one terminal of the battery 60, the circuit being completed from the opposite terminal of the battery through the conductor 72, the other pole of the switch 61 and a conductor 73 to the brush 55.
The lighting circuits 64', 65 may be connected directly to the generator circuit 7 O, 73 by closing the switch 62. If the generator is not operating the lighting circuit may be connected directly to the terminal of the battery by closing the switch 63. The lamps 66 may thus always be available.
If the wind. mill should not be in operation for, a relatively long period and the storage battery become discharged, the generator may be operated from the internal combustion engine 42 by actuating the clutch 35 which establishes the operative connection between the shaft 43 and the generator shaft.
If it is desired to operate the boat in a harbor or near the shore, the clutch 44 may be actuated to connect the shaft 43 of the engine to the propeller shaft 41. The generator may at the same time be connected to the shaft 43 if desired.
If the storage battery is more or less fully charged, the dynamo electric machine 50 may be operated as a motor to assist the engine in driving the propeller, by closing the switch 61 actuating the clutches 35 and 44 and adjusting the field regulating resistance '59? so that the generated voltage at the terminals of the motor armature, at the normal speed of the engine, is less than the voltage delivered from the storage battery.
If the vessel is operating in a strong wind,
the wind mill may be utilized to assist the engine in driving the propeller if desired, by actuating the clutches 30, 35 and 44 and opening the switches 61, 62. Under these conditions, the armature of the dynamo electric machine is running light and the hollow shaft 51 merely serves as a transmission shaft between the wind mill and the engine shaft 43.
It may be found to advantage in some cases, to drive both the propeller 40 and the wind wheel 21 from the internal combustion engine, the engine under these condi- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for tions may be operated alone or assisted by the motor. The wind wheel then acts as an auxiliary propeller operating in the air instead of in the water.
The size and arrangement of parts and the arrangement of clutches may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention and I desire that only such limi tations be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a boat, the combination with a wind wheel adapted to act either as a sail or as a driving wheel, a dynamo-electric machine adapted to act either as a motor or as a generator, a storage battery, a driving engine, a propeller and clutches for connecting the propeller to either the engine or both the engine and the dynamo-electric machine, and a clutch for connecting the dynamo-electric machine to the wind wheel, whereby the propeller may be driven by the wind wheel, the dynamo-electric machine or the engine and whereby the dynamo-electric machine may be driven by the engine or the wind wheel.
2. In a boat, the combination with a wind wheel adapted to act as a sail, a dynamoelectric machine, a clutch for coupling the machine to the winding wheel, a propeller, an internal combustion engine, a clutch for coupling the engine to the dynamo electric machine, clutch for coupling the engine to the propeller, a storage battery, a
transmission circuit, translating devices connected to said circuit, selective switches for connecting the battery to the transmission circuit, the battery to the dynamo electric machine or the machine to the transmission circuit and means for regulating the field excitation of the dynamo electric machine whereby the machine may operate either as motor or generator as desired.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of October in the year 1912. V
