APPLICATION FILED DEC- 24, 1914. 1,172,996., Patented Feb.22,1916.

I, William C. Hynaml 7 A TTOR/VEYS UNITED sTnTns PATENT onmon WILLIAM C. HYNARD, OF NEW/V YORK, N. Y., AS SIGNOR TO HYNARD AND JUNG 00., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK WAIST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed December 24, 1914; Serial No. 878,899. r
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM C. HYNARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Waist, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a waist having an elastic draw band secured to the back of the waist, the elastic draw band extending out through openings in the sides of the waist and being disposed at the outer side of the front of the waist and free therefrom so that while the back of the waist will be held down along a predetermined waist line the front of the waist may be adjusted up or down along the waist line to conform with the figure of the wearer, the sides of the waist being adjustable along an elastic draw band to accommodate the sides of the waist to the adjusted waist front.
There hashitherto been a difliculty in fitting women with ready to wear waists, for when a waist of a certain size has been selected it is often found that the waist will fit at all places except at the front which may be too short or too long. which causes great inconvenience and much dissatisfaction is avoided by the use of my improvement since the front of my waist at the waist line is held under an elastic draw band and it may be adjusted and held in adjusted position by the said elastic draw band while the sides of the waist may be adjusted as desired along the elastic waist band to harmonize with the adjusted front. It has also been found that when a woman is engaged in an athletic game she requires a waist with a front longer than ordinarily desired so that she may have greater freedom of movement. This requirement my waist supplies for it is possible to adjust the front of the waist at the waist band. The elastic draw band with which my waist is provided serves to draw down the front of the waist should it be drawn upwardly by the movement of the arms of the wearer.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.
This fault In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view showing the side of the Waist with my improvement; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing the rear of the waist illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the waist.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the waist 5 is constructed With openings 6 in its sides at the waist line 7 an elastic draw band 8 being disposed through the said openings 6. An elastic draw band 8 is disposed within the waist 5 at the rear 9 of the waist and the said band 8 is prevented from vertical movement relatively to the waist line of the waist by means of the tape 10 to which the gathered portion 11 of the waist is sewed on the lines 12 and 13. It will be understood that the elastic draw band 8 may be adjusted in the opening 14 between the body of the waist and the tape 10, although the tape 10 will prevent the movement of the elastic draw band 8 up or down.
WVhile the rear 9 of the waist 5 will be held at the waist band along the lines 12 and 13, it will be understood that the front 15 of the waist is free from the elastic draw band 8 so that it may be raised or lowered as may be desired to conform with the figure of the wearer, it being possible to hold the front 15 of the waist at the waist line in any desired position, the front 15 of the waist being long enough to permit it to be raised considerably should occasion require. The ends 16 of the'elastic draw band 8 are s'ecured in front by a fastener 17 of any usual construction.
While the front of the waist may be adjusted relatively to the waist line in the manner set forth, the elastic band 8 will, after the said adjustment, tend to hold the front of the waist in adjusted position, while giving the wearer great freedom of action. When the front of the waist starts to move upwardly because of the movement of the arms of the wearer, the elastic draw band, which is slightly stretched, clings to and grips the front of the waist, thereby holding the front of the waist yieldingly down against upward movement.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters serves to hold down yieldingly the front of 10 Patent: the Waist against upward movement.
A Waist provided with an elastic Waist In testimony whereof I have signed my band, the front of said band being free from name to this specification in the presence of r the Waist at the front but secured to the the two subscribing Witnesses.
Waist at the sides thereof, whereby vertical WILLIAM C. HYNARD. adjustment of the Waist at the front rela- Witnesses:
tively to the elastic band, is permitted While EVERARD B. MARSHALL,
after adjustment the elasticity of said band PHILIP D. RoLLHAUs.
