1 b all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. Hui:- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door securers and has for its object the production of a door securer which is simple in construction, and which may be easily attached to the ordinary door without injurying the frame or the door.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple lock or securing device which may be made from sheet metal and possesses a great amount of strength notwithstanding the lightness of the material out of which the lock is constructed.
With these and other objects in View this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a transverse section of the door showing the improved lock attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a back view of the lock. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof. Fig. 41- is an end view of the lock. 5 is a section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the end of the main securing section of the lock. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the blank from which the end of the portion of the device as illustrated in Fig. 3 is formed. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective of a modified form of the invention disclosing the reinforced end of the main portion of the locking device, and Fig. 9 is a plan view of the blank from which the structure disclosed in Fig. 8 is formed.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the primary or main section which consists of an elongated body or shank having its end 2 bent at right angles to the body or shank 1. This end 2 is provided with a pair of cars 3, which ears are bent at right angles to the end 2, and are adapted to greatly reinforce the flanged end 2 of the primary section of the locking device. This primary section is made of very thin metal throughout. The ears 3 are provided with a substantially long support engaging face 5 4 so as to efficiently assist in reinforcing the flanged end 2 of the primary section 1. In F ig. 7 there is illustrated the form of blank from which the construction disclosed in Fig. 6 is formed and in forming the device as illustrated in F ig. 6 the ears 3 are bent upon the fold lines 5 after the end 2 has been bent upon the fold line 6. By the construction justdescribed, a very ellicient reinforcing means has been produced for the end of the primary section 1, without mate rially increasing the weight of the locking device.
An auxiliary section 7 is placed upon the primary section 1, and has its edges folded as at S for forming a channel into which the primary section 1 travels. The sides of the folded edges 8 are spaced as clearly illustrated in F 3 for allowing the binding screw 9 to work therein. The binding screw 9 is fixedly secured to the primary section 1 and carries a wing nut 10 which nut is adapted to firmly clamp the auxiliary section in an adjusted position upon the primary section. The auxiliary section is provided with a laterally extending flange 11, which flange, like the flange of the primary section is provided with a pair of angularly disposed cars 12, which ears rest against the face of the auxiliary section. and greatly reinforce the laterally extending flange or lip 11.
The present locking device is preferably placed upon the edge of the door so as to have the laterally extending end 2 of the primary section to engage the socket which is adapted to receive the latch of the door. It will be obvious that owing to the con struction of the inner end of the primary section as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the same may be placed within the latch receiving socket 13 without interfering with the operation of the latch itself in view of the fact that this end is so formed as to receive the latch itself, that is to say, the end of the latch may be engaged. between the two flanges 3 carried by the end 2 of the primary section, which is, as has been stated, formed of very thin sheet metal, and is therefore adapted to occupy the spaces, common in keepers, around the latch. The flanges 12 of the auxiliary section engage the outer face of the door as at 14 thereby forming a good brace in combination with the end 2 of the primary section. Of course, the auxiliary section is firmly clamped in connection with the primary section 1, through the medium of the wing nut 9 as previously described.
In Fig. 8 I have shown a modified form of the present invention, wherein the end of the primary section 1 is provided with a vertically extending portion carrying an inclined wall 16 which wall terminates into a horizontally extending portion 17 extending parallel to the body portion of the primary sections 1. The inclined wall 16 carries upon each edge thereof an angularly disposed flange 18, which flange greatly reinforces and strengthens the end construction of the primary section 1. The blank from which the construction illustrated in Fig. 8 is formed is clearly disclosed in Fig. 9, and the flanges 18 are formed from the body by being bent upon the fold lines 19. The folding of this blank will be obvious upon giving the two views 8 and 9 careful consideration.
To increase the friction between piece 1 and piece 7, the back part of the former and the inside of the fold 8 have stamped therein a number of fine serrated or file-like teeth, denoted by 8. This will obviously make it harder to slide the two pieces after the nut 9 is tightened.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A door securer comprising a. major section formed from a blank having substantially triangular side wings at one end, the end portion of the blank being bent at substantially right angles to the major portion and the side wings being bent at substantially right angles to the end portion and away from the major portion of the major section, the bent portion of the major section forming a locking lug adapted to fit into a socket formed in a door jamb and receive the latch of a door, an auxiliary section slidably mounted upon said major section and having one end portion provided with side ears,the end portion being bent at right angles to the major portion and the side ears bent back above the major portion of the auxiliary section to brace the bent end thereof, and means for holding said auxiliary section in an adjusted position upon the major section.
