Description

5km/SM2 i N,PETERS, PHOTO-UTHCGRAPHER, WASHINGnON D C @sind @time "DENNIS LANE, .on MONTPELIEB., VERMONL Leners Patent No. 107,789, aatea'september 27, 1870.
lIMPROVEMENT IN WATERWHE-ELS.
l. The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe `name.
To all whom it may concern: Bc it known that' I, DENNIS LANE, of Montpelier, 1n the -county of Washington and- State Vermont,
have invented a new 'and valuable Improvement in` llVater-lVheels; land I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact'description of the construction and operation of the-same, reference being had to the annexeddrawing making a part of this specification and to'thetlfetters and figures of ret'- erence markedthereon; i 4
Figure lof the drawing is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2 is' a central vertical section of the same. Figure`3is a side view of the wheel. l Figui-e4 is abottomviewof the wheel.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section of the case. L Figure 6 is'a top view of the pivot with its armsA My invention relates tolturbinesfand consists in the construction and no vel arrangement ot the annulargate between the chutes and thebuckcts; in 'the cylindrical guide, attae.1ed to the upper part ofthe case, and arranged to keep' the gate in proper position as it rises; and `in the novel forni and arrangement of the buckets and other parts of the wheel.
In` order to procureaccuracy and precision of' operation on the part ot an annular gatefal cylindrical i guide is usually employed.
This guide maybe attached to the case ot' the;
turbine in such aunanner that the-gate, in .rising,
either slides withiu'or without the guide.
In my invent-ion the. latter arrangement is adopted. The letter A ofr the drawing designates the cylindrical base o't' the case of my wheel.
To the .Upper part` di' this cylinder isattacl1ed a' circular horizontaliianch, B, arranged to extend inward a short distance beyond the inner ends of `the partitions which form the chutes c.
Upon the. lanch B, the circular series of chutes c is constructed, the partitions (L being surmounted ,by
the annular plate Secured to the` uppersurface of this annular plate i. are thesupports 71:, to' whichv is bolted the top C of the case, from which ektends downward a circular tlanch, k, which serves as the guide for'the gate.
D is the cylindrical gate,.mo ving vertically bctween the chutes on the one hand, and the buckets and guideon the other.
It is connected by the rods or arms h.' withthe sleeve l, which slides over the sleeve m ofthe case.
E represents the shaft ot' the wheel, -arranged to rotate on the pivot n, which is attached to the case by the arms fr. Y
Th'e shaft is shouldered at y to assist in supporting the top C. y
F is the body of the wheel, a basin-shaped casting,
hollowed in its upper surface, and extending dewn` wall, s, to which the upper portions of the buckets are secured.A
'bottom 4of the wheel to about half its height, and in consequence of the strength obtained thereby, the
much extended. l
In my wheel each bucket, after it joins the band K, extends to the rear at anangle of about twenty dejunction of the succeeding bucket.
1t will also be observed that the position and curvature ofthe buckets are such that, whateverq'uantity of water is admitted through the gate from the chutes,
v lnediately under or a little in rear of' the point ot' upon the outermost portions of 'the buckets, thereby with the diameter of the wheel.
The operation of mywhcel is as follows:
mit the desircdquantity of water to the buckets.
The water is directed by the tapering chutes upon that portionl of each bucket which is above the band K. Y The impetus of the water `having been expended upon this portion lof' Vthe bucket, its reactionary force or weight operates .upon the lower or inclined portion of the bucket within the circumscribiug band. f
rlhe water is prevented from passing downward over the exterior surface of the band K by the inner edge of the anch B of the case, which extends oyer and covers the the upper edge ot' the band.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
the guide 7o and ybetween the wheel and the chutes c, substantially as specified. v v
2. In combination with the annular gate D, descending within thecircle of chutes, and the sleeve l, the arms It', passing entirely without the case, as specified.
3. `rlhe water-wheel herein described, consisting of the basin-shaped casting F, connected with` the circumscribing band K by the buckets H, inclined from wardly to the band, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of ytwo witnesses. Witnesses:
E. M. GUEnNEv, GEO. L. LANE.
DENNIS l LANE.
The buckets Hare attached partly tothe 'concave This circumscri-bing band extends upwardfrom the lower or reactionary portion of the bucket can be very l grees, terminating atthe lower edge of the band, im-
it will operate both in the direct action and reaction securing the. greatest amount of leverage'consistent- The gate is elevated to a suicient height to adi l. rlhe annular gate l), moving exterior-ly upon the lower edge ot' the casting downwardly and out-
