CHANGEABLE SIGN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1912.
Application led May 27, 1912. Serial N o. 700,066.
To. all whom 'it may concern.' l
Be it known that I, ERNEST J BURGQUIs'r, a vcitizen 4of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 4in Changeable Signs, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, .forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to signs, and more particularly to those adapted `to be usd for indicating the price of articles display d for sale, and for `similar purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a sign for the purpose described having provision for changing certain of the characters thereof.
The invention contemplates a display card and a plurality of movable elements behind the card so mounted as to be capable of inl having a greater number ofl movable ele-l ments; Fig. 5 is a rear face view of the form of sign illustrated in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a detail front face View of a sign constructed in the manner illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5; and Fig. 7 is a front face view of one of the movable elements of the sign.
In carrying out the invention, a display card, as 10 or 11, is employed. Preferably this display card Will have a sight aperture, as 12 or 13. The remainder of the face of the car 10 or 11 which is not out away' the provision of the sight opening may be employed for displaying printed information, as that shown at 14, Fig. 1. The
changeable matter displayed by the sign will be preferably made up of characters displayed through-the sight opening 12 orchangeable matter may be made up of a greater number of characters, as those shown at 17, 18, 19 and 20, Flg. 6.
d The changeable characters, as those indi-A cated at 15 and 16, Fig. l, are preferably i printed upon thev marginal portions of rot-atable disks, as 21, 22. The number of these dlisks employed will usually be equal to the number of characters desired to be displayed through th'e sight opening 12 or 13. In the form of construction illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, four such disks are employed. In these figures, several disks are indicated by the numerals 23, 24, 25 and 26 respectively. All of the disks shown in the various figures of the drawings are of like construction. One of these, namely, the disk 21, ofthe structure illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is illust-rated as' being separated from other parts in Fig. 7. A series of characters, of which the one 15 appearing through the sight opening 12 in Fig. 1 -is one, is printed about the marginal portion of t-he disk. I
Compactness of construction is obtained by having the disks, as 21 and 22, overlap for the greater port-ion of their extent. In order that the disksmay be independently rotated, however, it is essential that they be separately pivoted. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the disk 21 is pivotally mounted upon the card 10, as by means of the tubular rivet shown at 27. For supporting the disk 22 a member 28is extended over the back of the card in rear of the disks. As shown, the member 28 takes the form of a strap Iwhich is equal in length to the length of the card 10. This strap is secured to the card 10 adjacent its opposite ends, as by means of the rivets 29 and 30. rlhe disk 22 is pivotally mounted upon the strap 28, as at 31, Figs. 2 and 3. The construction permits of the disks 21 and 22 being independently rotated, whereby either of the characters, as 15, 16, appearing through the sight opening 12 may bechanged. A sign is thus provided which is adapted to be used for indicating the price-of articles displayed for sale, and that part ofL the sign material which indicates the price being changeable to accord with variations in the price of the article.
In the form of construction illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the disk 23 is pivotally mounted upon the card 11, as at 32, Fig. 4.`
For supporting the disks 24, 25 and 26, a pair of straps, designated 33 and 34, are eX- tended over the back f the card 11. Most conveniently these straps are arranged dipreferably secured to the card 11, and for agonally upon the back of the card and are inclined in opposite directions. They are this purpose rivets, as 35, '136, are assed through the straps 33, 34, respective y, adjacent their opposite ends and through the card 11. The strap 33 serves for supporting thedisks 24 and 25. -These disks are arrangedupon oppo-site sides of the strap in order that they may be independently rotated. They -are pivotally lsecured to the strap, as by the rivets 37 and 38. The strap 34 serves for supporting the disk 26. This disk is located in front of the strap 34. It is pivotally mounted upon the strap, as by means of the tubular rivet 39. Obviously a greater number of disks than four might be provided, in which case one additional disk (not shown) might be mounted upon the strap 34 and located inrear of the same. A still greater number of disks might be employed through the use of a greater number of straps.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, as in the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, any one of the' characters of the matter appearing through the sight opening 13 or 12 may be changed independently 'of the others. For this purpose it is simply necessary to rotate the corresponding disk through a suiicient distance to display the desired character through the opening. Obviously the members 28, and 33, 34 serve as stays for stifening the display card upon which they are mounted.
. I claim as my invention- In a changeable sign in combination, a display card, a air of overlapping nonconcentric pivote members located in rear of the card and so arranged as to each display a portion of its surface from the front of the card, and a stay extending over the back of the card between the said pivoted. members, and having its opposite ends secured to the display card beyond the margins of that one of the said pivoted members which is located between it and the card, the said pivoted members being mounted upon opposite sides of the stay.
