종래의 크랭크샤프트 삭정기는 비트(bit)를 크랭크축에 접촉시켜 크랭크축의 회전함으로서 삭정하는 것이므로 정밀하게 원형으로 연마할 수 없었는바 그 이유는 크랭크축이 마모되거나 소손되면 축의 주면의 각 부분마다 쇠의 강도가 불균일하여 일정한 강도로 단조된 비트로서는 균일하게 연마할 수 없으므로 연마시 크랭크축에 미세한 돌출부가 발생하는 등 정밀하게 가공할 수 없었으며 크랭크축을 회전시켜 삭정하므로 막대한 동력손실을 초래하는 등 여러가지 결점이 있었다.Conventional crankshaft cutters are made by cutting bits by contacting the crankshaft and rotating the crankshaft.
