Abstract

PURPOSE: To impart the compatibility with a cementing material to foamed polystyrene beads, by dissolving of softening only the surface of the beads with a solvent, and attaching an inorganic powdery coating layer firmly to the dissolved or softened surface.
CONSTITUTION: (A) Foamed spherical polystyrene beads, foamed to an expansion ratio of 20W60 times, and having a diameter of about 0.1W5mm are preliminarily mixed with (B) an inorganic powder, e.g. calcium carbonate, for coating the beads and a solvent, e.g. acetone, having the property to dissolve the foamed beads to give a material containing the powder. The resultant material is then mixed in a mixer to coat the surface of the foamed beads with the inorganic powdery coating layer.
USE: Suitable for a lightweight aggregate, e.g. mortar, concrete, etc.
