Abstract

PURPOSE: To control the occurrence of macro-segregation and to obtain sound layer having a uniform thickness, by controlling the falling position of molten metallic drops generated at the leading end of a consumable electrode of the central part of the ingot.
CONSTITUTION: A guide 3 is arranged to the inner part of a water-cooled mold 2 adjacent to slag bath 4. A gradient is given to the upper surface of the guide 3 so that molten metallic drops 5 may convergently fall, and the diameter of the guide hole is set smaller than that of a consumable electrode 1. Then, the electricity is supplied between the consumable electrode 1 and a water-cooled surface plate 8 through the slage bath 4 to form a molten metallic bath 6. The metallic bath 6 is then cooled and an ingot 7 is formed. Since the molten metallic drops 5 fall locally, discontinuous solidifications which are easily formed at the outer circumferential side of the hole of the guide 3 are eliminated and occurrence of macrosegregation is controlled.
