Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare polyethylene having broad molecular weight distribution, by the continuous multistage polymerization of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a solid component obtained by reacting a tri-valent metal halide with a divalent metal compound, an electron donative compound, a transition metal compound, and an organo-aluminum compound.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polyethylene is prepared by the two-stage polymerization in the presence of a catalyst obtained by mixing (I) a component prepared by (1) reacting a tri-valent metal halide with a divalent metal hydroxide, etc., (2) reacting the solid product with a compound of a transition metal of group IVa or Va of the periodic table in the presence of an electron donative compound, and (c) reacting the reaction product with a halogen-containing transition metal compound, etc., with (II) an organo-aluminum compound, wherein the first-stage polymerization is carried out in a solvent at 30W100°C and 11W70kg/cm2 maintaining the molar ratio of ethylene: H2 in the gas phase to 1:0.001W0.5, to obtain the polymer suspended in the solvent, and the second-stage polymerization is carried out at 50W120°C and a pressure of 11W70kg/cm2 maintaining the molar ratio of ethylene: H2 to 1:0.1W3.0.
