Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high yield and selectivity at relatively low pressure, by the reaction of acetic anhydride with hydrogen in the vapor phase in the presence of a metallic platinum or rhodium catalyst supported on a carrier.
CONSTITUTION: Acetaldehyde and acetic acid are produced from acetic anhydride and hydrogen in the vapor phase in the presence of a metallic platinum or rhodium catalyst supported on a carrier, e.g. alumina, silica, silica alumina, titania, zirconia, active carbon, etc., at 100W200°C, preferably at ordinary pressure to about 20atm, preferably in a fixed catalytic bed with no loss of the catalys due to the abrasion during the reaction.
EFFECT: The catalyst components will not dissolve out during the reaction due to the vapor phase, and the catalytic activity may be maintained stable.
