Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the preparation of sheet-shaped active carbon fibers having improved adsorbability and desorbability, and easy handling without causing fusion of fibers, by preparing the sheet-shaped active carbon fibers from both extremely thin acrylic type fibers and a specific amount of inorganic fibers.
CONSTITUTION: A sheet-shaped material comprising 50W95wt% extremely thin fibers having a single fiber denier ≤0.8 consisting of acrylonitrile homopolymer or acrylonitrile copolymer made of acrylonitrile as a main ingredient, 5W50wt% inorganic fibers, e.g., glass fibers, stainless steel fibers, potassium titanate fibers, ceramic fibers, asbestos fibers, etc. and 0W45wt% other fibers is subjected to fire- resisting treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere at 200W300°C. The treated sheet- shaped material is carbonized at a temperature ≤1,300°C and activated in an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g., steam, at 700W1,000°C. Consequently, sheet-shaped active carbon fibers having improved adsorbability and desorbability are prepared without causing the fusion of the fibers one another during fire-resisting treatment.
