Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce water-soluble rust preventives having no likelihood of polluting environments by dissolving the water soluble polyvinyl alcohol, which is obtainable by polymerizing vinyl acetate to polyvinyl acetate and further saponifying the same, in water. CONSTITUTION:Vinyl acetate is polymerized at mean degrees of polymerization, 100 to 2000 to polyvinyl acetate. Next, it is saponified at degrees of saponification; 65 to 100mole% to produce polyvinyl alcohol. This is dissolved in water at concentrations of 0.1 to 3% and the solution is used as rust preventives for iron, brass, aluminum, chromium, etc. The aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution is physiologically harmless, has no likelilood of polluting environments and does not require large amount of investment to waste water treatment facilities.
