Abstract

962,268. Starting prime movers; control of A.C. motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 29, 1962 [July 14, 1961], No. 25628/61. Headings H2H and H2J. A synchronous machine 1 operates as a motor to drive gas turbine 2, and as an alternator driven by the turbine to supply current to a constant frequency network 7. During motoring operation, the machine 1 is supplied through frequency changer 6 comprising semiconductor converters, a three-phase reference voltage being supplied to the frequency changer from tachometer generators 3, 3a. The voltage of the power supply from the frequency changer to the machine is phase-advanced so that the machine accelerates. The tachometer generators are energized with current of the same phase number and the same frequency as the polyphase source, the phase rotation in one of the tachometer generators being opposite to that in the other. When the machine 1 operates as an alternator its output frequency is reduced by the action of the frequency changer to the value required by the network 7. Control signals for the frequency changer are now supplied from line 11, reference signals being supplied from a local oscillator. When several turbines are equipped as described, a common reference signal line is provided.
