Means for lowering the work support of a blindstitch sewing machine or for raising the presser bar of an industrial sewing machine comprises a brake motor coupled with reduction gearing. As shown, the work-support 2 of a blindstitch sewing machine is couple by a connecting rod 3 and a crank 4 to the output shaft of reduction gearing 6 driven by a motor 7, said shaft carrying a disc 5 having a cam hole 16. A permanent magnet 11, mounted slidably but non-rotatably upon the shaft 12 of motor 7 within a casing 10, engages a fixed plate 14 to brake the motor when the latter is de-energized. Energization of the motor is accompanied by energization of a coil 13 adapted thereby to repel magnet 11 from the brake disc 14. In the raised position of the support 2, cam 16 opens a spring-biased switch 20, the latter then being connected to the movable blade of a two-way switch 15. Actuation of switch 15 by means of a treadle or knee press serves to energize motor 7 via a closed spring-biased switch 19. Crank 4 then rotates from its top dead centre to its bottom dead centre, when cam opens switch 19 to stop the motor. Support 2 is raised when the treadle or knee press is released to allow the movable blade of switch 15 to assume its initial position.
