Abstract
Propylene oxide is produced by passing molecular oxygen through a solution of propylene in a water immiscible liquid hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent which is substantially inert to oxygen at a temperature between 100 and 200 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure to form a reaction mixture containing propylene oxide and unreacted propylene, bringing the reaction mixture still substantially under reaction pressure into contact with water to extract the propylene oxide made into the aqueous phase, and recycling the unreacted propylene and the liquid hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent to the oxidation stage. Several suitable solvents are specified, benzene being preferred. Examples are given.
