Abstract

937,717. Control of A.C. motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 29, 1962 [July 14, 1961], No. 25626/61. Class 38 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] A polyphase dynamo-electric machine 1 operates as a motor to start gas turbine 2, and as a generator driven by the turbine to supply current to a load network operating at constant frequency. When the machine 1 is motoring, power is drawn from network 7 through frequency changer 6 comprising semi-conductor converters. A three-phase reference voltage is supplied to the frequency changer from a local oscillator 8, and a control voltage through switch 9s. During the initial starting period, the machine 1 operates as an induction motor at low frequency and low voltage. When the machine has accelerated to a speed corresponding to the frequency of oscillator 8, the oscillator is disconnected and the reference voltage for the frequency changer is now taken from tachometer generator 3, such voltage being phase-advanced with respect to the E.M.F. generated in machine 1. The field of the machine 1 is now excited with direct-current through terminals 4, 5, and the machine acts as a synchronous motor for further acceleration. Thereafter, the turbine drives the machine as an alternator, the frequency of which is reduced by the frequency changer to the value required by the network 7. Direct-current excitation is supplied through terminals 4, 5. Control signals for the frequency changer are now supplied from generator output line 11. Reference signals whose frequency corresponds with that of the network 7 are supplied to the frequency changer from a local oscillator. When several units are individually coupled each to a turbine, the reference signals of supply frequency can be derived from a frequency changer associated with a turbine which has already run up.
