Abstract

901,340. Pallets for handling loads; lifting jacks. PORTER CO. (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd., H. K. Jan. 6, 1961 [Jan. 12, 1960], No. 1143/60. Classes 78(3) and 78 (4). [Also in Group XXXII] A goods-supporting pallet is made adaptable for wheeled transport by the provision of retractable castor wheels which, when retracted, lie wholly within the pallet body. As shown, the pallet consists of flat metal sheets 1, 2 separated by corrugated metal separators such as 1a and/or stringers 3 of channel-section, the sides being enclosed other than where slots 5 for the tines of a lift truck are required. These slots may be supplemented or replaced by sling hooks. Each of the wheels 6 may be mounted, as in Fig. 3, on the piston 7 of an hydraulic jack whose cylinder 8 is accommodated within the pallet body, the jacks being operable independently or together from a single source of fluid pressure to extend the wheels, their retraction on release of pressure being effected by springs (not shown) or by the load on the pallet. In another form wherein double-acting hydraulic jacks may be employed, each jack operates a pair of wheels by means of a horizontally-reciprocable rod 23, Fig. 11, movable by the jack and acting on a pair of bell-crank levers 25 supporting each wheel 19.
