Abstract
A concentrated aqueous solution which is suitable, when diluted, for use as a coolant comprises (a) an alkali metal benzoate, (b) an alkali metal nitrite, (c) an alkali metal borate, suitably borax, and (d) enough di- or poly-hydric alcohol, e.g. glycol, glycerol, erythritol, mannitol or sorbitol, to solubilize the borate; (a), (b) and (c) are preferably present as the sodium salts. Suitable compositions consist by weight of (1) 25% sodium benzoate, 2,5% sodium nitrite, 5% borax, 25% glycol, and 42,5% water; (2) 25% sodium benzoate, 2,5% sodium nitrite, 5% borax, 4,5% mannitol, and 63% water; and (3) 15% sodium benzoate, 3% sodium nitrite, 6% borax, 4% mannitol and 72% water. Such solutions are generally diluted before use with 24 volumes either of water or of a water-glycol mixture containing 20% by volume of glycol. Specification 860,958 is referred to.
