Abstract

874,010. Stuffing-box substitutes. WOODHEAD-MONROE Ltd. March 17, 1959 [June 10, 1958], No. 18551/58. Class 122 (5). A seal for a shaft or spindle, for example the piston-rod 14 of a telescopic hydraulic shockabsorber, comprises a ring 10 of synthetic rubber or other resilient material having a number of sealing lips 11, 12 and 13 of which one 11, has a smaller free bore and a greater root diameter than the other lips 12 and 13. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the ring 10 is clamped between an end cap 17 and a retainer 19 by a coil spring 20 which also urges the lip 11 against the rod 14.
