Abstract
848,962. Pneumatic tyres. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. May 1, 1958 [Nov. 27, 1957], No. 13873/58. Classes 144 (1) and 144 (2). A pneumatic tyre has carcase reinforcing plies of parallel cords which extend from bead to bead along a path defined by the relation where b is the cord angle with respect to the circumferential direction at any point along the path, n is an integer from 1 to 4, and r is the radial distance of the point from the tyre axis. Such a path provides a cord angle of from 40 to 48 degrees at the beads and from 32 to 42 degrees at the tyre crown. Fig. 4 shows the cord angles of the conventional and geodesic paths A, B respectively in comparison with those of the present path C. In building such a tyre, flat rubberized plies are used in which the cord extends transversely of the ply from edge to edge along a path defined by the relation:- wherein B is the cord angle in the flat ply, E is a factor determined by the stress-strain properties of the cord, F is a factor dependent upon E and the shear modulus of rubber, L is the ply length and b o and r o are the cord angle and tyre radius respectively at the finished tyre crown, band r being as defined above. Such flat plies are produced by an apparatus as shown in Fig. 5 wherein the cord 10 is laid transversely across a rubber ply 12, supported on a conveyor belt 13, by a carriage 23 which is reciprocated along a bar 22 having a contour defined by the above relation for cos #. The bar 22 is carried at its ends by blocks 19, 20 adjustably clamped on side rails 17, 18 alongside the belt 13, and the belt 13 extends around roller 14, 15, one, 15, of which is rotated step by step by a ratchet 30 and pawl 31. The pawl 31 is operated by a lever 32 controlled by a solenoid 34 which is actuated by switches 39 on the blocks 19, 20, the switches being operated by the carriage 23 at each end of its traverse thereby to advance the conveyer belt.
