Abstract

845,995. Control of A.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Nov. 1, 1957 [Oct. 24, 1956], No. 32435/56. Class 38 (3). An induction motor is operated at creep speed by energizing one of its windings with A.C., while the other winding is simultaneously supplied with D.C. In one arrangement, two of the slip-rings are connected through bridge rectifier 4 and transformer 5 to two phases of the A.C. supply, whilst the terminal F is connected to either terminal D or E. Thus a D.C. component is supplied to two phases of the rotor windings and these are short-circuited through the rectifier during alternate half-cycles of the supply. Variation of the creeping speed is effected by adjustable resistors 6 in series with the stator winding, and the peak voltage across the rectifier is reduced by resistor 7. The starting torque is reduced by means of resistor 8, whilst, to increase the starting torque, resistors may be connected directly between the slip-rings. In another arrangement, a rectifier 9 is connected between two of the slip-rings, and resistors 10, 11 are provided. Furthermore, a resistor may be connected in series with the rectifier between two of the phase terminals in order to reduce the torque.
