Abstract
785,363. Counterbalanced brackets. AMALGAMATED DENTAL CO., Ltd. July 1, 1955 [July 1, 1954], No. 19298/54. Class 52(5) A counterbalanced bracket comprises a parallelogram linkage and a spring- loaded cross link, a cam and follower mechanism being provided to vary the spring thrust in response to displacement of the linkage to give automatic counterpoise as the long links of the parallelogram are swung to both sides of the horizontal. As shown, a sleeve formed by cover plates 6 and a tubular strut 9, housed in the sleeve, form the long links of the parallelogram, the short links being formed by a plate 1, secured to a support 4 by a vertical pivot 3, and a plate 10 connected by a vertical swivel pin 11 to a support 12 for the load. The plates 6 and the bifurcated ends 8, 15 of the strut 9 are pivoted to the plates 1, 10 at 5, 13, 7, 14, the end 8 being slotted at 19 and housing a roller 20 yoked to a bearing 23 slidable on the strut 9. One end of a cross link 16 is also pivoted to the plate 1 at 5 and at its other end is pivoted at 17 to plates 6 and to a bearing 18 slidable on the strut 9. A spring 24 between the bearings 18, 23 urges the roller 20 against the end of plate 1 which is shaped as a cam 25 circular about the pivot 7 and having a sharply curved lower part 26 so that as the linkage is depressed below the horizontal the bearing 23 recedes from the bearing 18 and the thrust of the spring is diminished, diminution on the other side of the horizontal being effected by sliding of the cross-link. The cam profile is such that counterpoise of the load is effected by the change in the thrust of the spring together with the leverage of the roller 20 on the strut 9. An abutment 27 and threaded sleeve 28 are a fine adjustment and for use with an electric lamp wires and a switch are provided.
