Class 61 In a clamp of the kind operated by a toggle mechanism and comprising a movable jaw 21 pivotally mounted on a support member 11 and movable to its operative position by an operating lever 15 pivotally mounted at 17 on the support member 11 and connected to the jaw member by links 24, 25 which together with the lever 15 and jaw 21 form the toggle mechanism the initial movement of the clamping spindle 22 of the member 21 from its clamping position is substantially along its own axis at right angles to the work piece being clamped. The links 24, 25 are mounted one above the other and parallel to each other. A further pair of links 24a, 25a are provided on the other side of the block 21 (Fig. 4). The upper arms 24, 24a carry a pivot pin 28 for the pivotal connection of a link 29. The other end of the 'link is connected to a bifurcated handle 16 of the operating lever 15 by a pivot pin 30. When the clamp is in its operative position the handle 16 is vertical, the pivot points 17, 28 and 30 are in line and the arms 24, 25 are arranged so that their outer ends connected to the block 21 just pass the horizontal. This provides for the initial movement of the spindle 22 being substantially vertical along its axis. The pantograph arrangement of the arms 24, 25 ensures that the movement of these arms by the operating lever 15 will provide a movement of the block 21 in which the clamping spindle 22 is always held in the vertical position.
