Abstract
769,829. Gases containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide. FOSTER WHEELER, Ltd. June 2, 1955 [June 2, 1954], No. 15846/55. Class 55 (1). Apparatus for the production of a gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide comprises a reactor 20 wherein a suspension of a particulate solid carbonaceous fuel in steam is gasified with oxygen, a waste-heat boiler 86 through which by line 30 the gaseous products from the reactor are led and a preheater 130 wherein a mixture of steam and solid fuel is preheated by means of the gaseous products after they have left the boiler. As shown, the gaseous products leave the boiler 86 by line 99 passing first to a steam superheater 101 and thence by line 117 to the preheater 130 which they leave by line 149. The reactor 20 has an annular boiler, the steam drum 33 of which is connected by a line 36 to the outlet line 30 for gaseous products to equalize the pressure on the inner shell of the boiler. The reactor terminates at its lower end in a restricted throat where gaseous products are sprayed with water from sprays 28. Clinker collects in the vessel 27 and sinks to the bottom of the water contained therein. The clinker is ground between two rollers and passes through valves 46 and 47 into a hopper 45 from which it is discharged. The waste-heat boiler 86 and the superheater 101 comprise a tubular system for heat exchange between the hot gaseous products and water or steam and their outer shells are formed as annular boilers. The preheater 130 also has a tubular system for heat exchange. The preheater 130 and the superheater 101 have bellows type expansion seals 144 and 114 respectively. Pulverized coal is fed under gravity from a storage bin 120 through conduits 121 and controlled by gate valves 122 and thence by line 123 and lock valve 125 into a lock hopper 124. The hopper 124 is connected through a lock valve (not shown) with a pressure hopper 127 and the coal is discharged therefrom by a coal feeder 128 into line 129 to be picked up by superheated steam in line 118. The mixture of coal and steam is preheated and flows through conduits 21 into the reactor 20 where it is reacted with oxygen.
