[Also in Group XIII] Welding by pressure.-A method of making a sheet metal heat exchanger or radiator section consisting of two half-sections a, b formed by stamping, comprises applying a lining i of another metal before or after stamping, clamping the half-sections together with their flanges r lying snugly against each other, and welding, brazing or soldering the flanges and any stiffening ribs s together. The lining may be applied by dipping or by electrolytic deposition in which case the flange and stiffening ribs are masked to prevent deposition of the coating thereon when the half-sections are to be resistance welded together ; alternatively the lining may comprise inner half-shells stamped simultaneously with or separate from the half-sections. The latter may be stamped by the method described in Specification 515,959 and the two shells may be welded together by resistance welding using roller electrodes as described in Specification 645,487. The half-sections may be of steel and the lining of tinned copper sheet or foil, and brazing material in foil or paste form may be inserted between the flanges of the lining so that the heat of the resistance welding will effect the brazing or soldering of the lining. The flanges of the lining may be stopped short of the welding track of the roller electrodes so as to prevent burning of the lining. Alternatively, the lining may be of stainless steel, cupro-nickel, nickel, silver or aluminium.
