736,279. Packing for pistons and piston rods. LUBECKER KALTEMASCHINEN GES. Dec. 4, 1953 [Dec. 6, 1952 ; Nov. 19, 1953], No. 33754/53. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). Packing in a rotating or reciprocating piston 2 or piston rod or in the guide surface for the piston rod comprises a plurality of thin splitrings 5 pressed radially by the fluid in the cylinder, a resilient annular sealing body 6 behind the rings and a valve 12 allowing access of the operating fluid in the cylinder, only at the highest operating pressures, to the body 6 to press the rings 5 against their co-operating bearing surface. As applied to packing the piston 2, the rings 5 may be spring rings guided between slit rings 4 of cast-iron and seated on a body 6 of a substance like rubber or of thin resilient metal if the operating fluid is a hot gas. The bearing pressure of the rings may be increased by a leaf-spring 9 of oil-gas and acidproof material, or by pre-stressing the sealing body 6. One or more piston rings in separate grooves may be provided in front of the packet of rings 4, 5 to reduce the pressure of the operating fluid on the outside of the rings 4, 5. At least one ring 13, preferably of rubber, rubber-like material or leather, may be located behind the rings 4, 5 to strip particles of oil and dirt from the cylinder and effect initial sealing during running-in of the rings 5 which may be ground and lapped on the flat -surfaces. In a modification, the sealing body 6 and rings 13 are of rectangular section.
