Abstract

723,932. Supply systems for space-discharge apparatus. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd. June 5, 1953 [June 12, 1952], No. 14829/52. Class 38 (4). When a discharge lamp circuit is connected to an alternating-current source at circuit input terminals 5 a current surge through a power-factor correction capacitor 3 and the primary portion 10 of an auto-transformer 1 which are serially connected across terminals 5 produces a voltage surge which is stepped up by the auto-transformer 1 and is applied as a starting voltage to a discharge lamp 6, the lamp being serially connected with the whole winding of the auto-transformer 1 across the terminals 5 and being connected directly in parallel with the primary winding 7-of a second auto-transformer 2 which has at each end of its winding 7 a secondary portion 8 connected to supply heating current to a corresponding filament 9 of the lamp. During running the first auto-transformer 1 serves as a ballast. The secondary portions 8 of the second autotransformer may, as shown, comprise extensions of the primary winding, or may, as disclosed in Fig. 2 (not shown) be included in the primary winding turns.
