Abstract

The invention comprises purine derivatives of the formula <FORM:0713259/IV (b)/1> where R1 is hydrogen or alkyl, R2 is alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl, or -NR1R2 is hydrazino or a heterocyclic system such as pyrrolidino, piperidino or morpholino; also salts thereof. These are made by alkylating 6 - mercaptopurine (see Specification 713,286), e.g. with dimethyl sulphate or methyl iodide, and reacting the resulting 6-alkylmercaptopurine with HNR1R2. Examples show the production of 6-dimethylamino-, 6-ethylamino-, 6-n-butylamino-, 6-anilino, 6-p-chloranilino, 6 - hydrazino, 6 - b - aminoethylamino-, 6 - morpholino, 6 - methylamino - and 6-diethylaminopurines. The preparation of 6-mercaptopurine (from hypoxanthine and phosphorus pentasulphide) and 6-methylmercaptopurine is also described.
