688,656. Recovering heat from combustion gases. AIR PREHEATER CORPORATION. Sept. 13, 1950 [Dec. 30, 1949], No. 22547/50. Class 64 (i) In a system for the recovery of heat from combustion gases which includes a furnace from which the hot gases pass through a series of heat-exchangers including an economizer 16, an air preheater 20 and other heat-exchangers, 14, 18 located in the gas passage, concentrated sulphuric acid is caused to flow over the gas-contacted surfaces of the air preheater 20. In the form shown, the air preheater 20 is of the Ljungstrom rotary regenerative type and is located at a point in the gas stream where the temperature of the combustion gases is below the dew point. Concentrated sulphuric acid is sprayed on to the heat exchange surfaces of the rotor through a nozzle on the end of a supply pipe 52 and is then pumped together with acid formed by condensation of the vapour in the gases and with any solid material carried over by the gases, through a pipe 46 to a cleaning unit 48. The acid spraying is carried out in a separate section 40 (Fig. 2) of the preheater casing. It is stated that this system of washing with concentrated sulphuric acid may be applied also to recuperative plate or tubular air preheaters.
