Abstract

643,507. Tube joints. SMITH & CO. (LONDON E ), Ltd J., and SMITH Sir J. J. Nov. 19, 1947, Nos. 30671 and 34140. [Class 99(i)] [Also in Group X] A structural member, e.g. a stretcher for a collapsable tent is formed of two tubes 29, 30, Fig. 1; connected by a twopart axially bored spigot 28, 28<SP>1</SP> provided with grooves 32, 31 into which the tubes are pressed, the part 28<SP>1</SP> being secured within the tube 29 in spaced relation to its end, whilst the part, 28, secured within and projecting from the end of the tube 30, engages slidably and rotatably in the end of the tube 29. A rod 34 secured at one end 34' to the spigot part 28 passes slidably through the bore of the other part 28<SP>1</SP> and is provided with a head 35 held away from the part 28<SP>1</SP> by a compression spring 36, thus allowing limited end to end movement of the two tubes 29, 30. A ring 37 and hook 41 are secured as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a ridge tube which comprises tubes 29, 30 and 29<SP>1</SP>, 30<SP>1</SP> each pair connected together as above described with the adjacent ends of the tubes 30, 30<SP>1</SP> provided with projecting hinge lugs 50, 51 connected by a hinge pin 52. The arrangement is such that when the lugs hang downwardly the ridge tube is locked rigidly in its extended position and it is collapsed by. turning the lugs 50, 51 together with the tubes 30, 30<SP>1</SP> and parts 28 through 180 degrees so that the lugs project upwardly. Outer eye pieces 37, 37<SP>1</SP> are provided as shown:
