Abstract

In laundering and other washing processes the softening of the water by means of alkaline reacting substances, for example, carbonate bicarbonates and silicates of soda and potash and hydroxide of sodium and potassium is accelerated by mixing with one or more of the substances finely-divided crystalline or micro-crystalline calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate, the mixture being added to the water and the resulting precipitate being allowed to remain in the water during laundering. In an example 1.5 grams of calcined soda is used with from .02 to 2 grams of calcium carbonate per litre of water.
