Abstract
581,876. Controlling aircraft. BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and HALL, E. V. Julv 11. 1944. No. 13228. [Class 4] A spoiler or brake flap is carried on at least two pivoted radius arms and is linked to an auxiliary pivoted flap opening in the opposite direction in such a manner that after an initial movement of the brake flap the air passing between it and the surface on which it is mounted impinges on the auxiliary flap and partially cancels the hinge moment of the brake flap. In one form, Fig. 3, a spoiler or brake flap 1 is carried by two or more arms 2 pivoted to the aircraft at 3 and is connected by links 7 to an auxiliary flap 4 carried by two or more arms 5 pivoted to the aircraft at 6. Normally, both flaps are flush with the surface. Initial operation of flap 1 raises flap 2 to a position where it is acted upon by the airflow under flap 1 to assist further opening of the latter. In a modification, Fig. 4, an arrangement of flaps similar to Fig. 3 is disposed on the upper surface of an aerofoil, and a pivoted spoiler or brake flap 12 on the lower surface is connected by links 17 to an auxiliary flap 15 pivoted to the aerofoil at 16. Both flaps 2 and 12 are operated simultaneously by a rod 11 through links 10, 14 and bell-crank levers 9; 13.
