Abstract

572,661. Bombs. BLACKER, L. V. S. Sept. 28, 1940, No. 14670. [Classes 9 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to bombs dropped from aircraft or projected by a throwing device and having a directing tail 6 and a contour fairing 4 connecting the explosive head 1 with the tail. According to the invention, the explosive head comprises a plastic high explosive filling disposed behind a crushable nose casing. The invention is shown applied to a bomb having a tail tube 5 fitting over a stick 11 on the projecting device which includes a striker 13 for firing a propelling cartridge 9 carried by the bomb. The bomb body comprises a base cup 2 to which is secured a nose casing 1 of thin material such as sheet steel, aluminium, synthetic resin or papier mache, the filling 3 being a plastic high explosive which spreads on impact of the bomb against armour plating.
