Abstract
535,119. Reciprocating pumps. STEVENS, A. H. (Jackson Co., B.). Nov. 29, 1939, No. 31070. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] Hydraulic pumping apparatus comprises a diaphragm, plunger, floating piston, or like movable partition dividing each of a number of cylinders into motive-liquid and pulp-liquid compartments, valve means for intermittently admitting motive-liquid under pressure to said motive-liquid compartments to move the partitions in one direction, and valve means for admitting and discharging pump-liquid to and from the pump-liquid compartments, the motiveliquid valve means being actuated solely by motive-liquid independently of the movements of the partitions. The partitions may be moved in the opposite direction by exhausting the spent motive-liquid from the motive-liquid compartments and/or by pump-liquid at relatively low pressure supplied to the pumpliquid compartments between intervals of admission of motive-liquid. For the motiveliquid, a steady stream of pressure water is supplied preferably by means of a centrifugal pump. Fig. 2 shows a section through a pump with three horizontal parallel cylinders 2 each containing a radially expansible rubber or like elastic diaphragm 20 with spacer bars 18, and each having a pump-liquid suction and discharge chamber 5, inlet and discharge valves 6, 7, and common suction and discharge headers 8, 9. The chamber 5 communicates with the cylinder space 23 by means of passages 24, and motive-liquid is supplied to the open end 21 of the diaphragm assembly by means of a reciprocating valve 33 and a passage 38. The valve 33 is reciprocated by motive-liquid supplied to the upper side of a piston 52, and the phase relationship between the three valves is maintained by connecting them by rods 47 to a common crankshaft 45. This motiveliquid is supplied through a branch conduit 54 leading to a chamber containing a rotary distributing valve secured to the crankshaft 45 and serving the pistons 52 in sequence. The volume of motive-liquid flowing to the valve motor is regulated according to the rate of flow of motive-liquid to the diaphragm by means of a venturi regulator 65 with a throttle valve 62 leading to the branch pipe 54. Fig. 7 shows the invention applied to a pump having three radial cylinders such as 71 each containing an axially expansible "Sylphon" bellows 74 with a rigid end plate 75 at its movable end, a reciprocating valve 32<SP>1</SP> operated by a piston 51<SP>1</SP>, and a rotary distribution valve 56<SP>1</SP>. Fig. 9 shows the invention applied to a pump having three vertical cylinders such as 101 each containing an axially expansible " Sylphon " bellows 125 secured to the motive-liquid ends of the cylinders, the motive-liquid being admitted by a rotary distributing valve 129 rotated by a small hydraulic radial-piston motor 135. Fig. 15 shows a pump similar to that shown in Fig. 2, but using a floating piston 215.
