Abstract

508,171. Automatic guns. TAUSCHEK, G. Oct. 20, 1938, No. 30334. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1937. [Classes 9 (i) and 92 (ii)] A gun which fires any number of shots independently of one another is so arranged that, during the firing of one projectile, the barrel is closed at the breech by the projectile next to be discharged which acts as a breechblock. In the form shown, projectiles 4 are connected end to end to form a chain. When the first projectile is chambered, Fig. 1, the next projectile is retained by a pawl 5. The chain is fed through the gun by gas-operated means comprising a gas piston connected to a pawl 13 which, under the action of a spring 9 compressed by the piston, engages the projectiles in turn to feed them forward. The projectile,., are fired electrically by current from a battery 23 controlled by a firing-switch 22. The current passes through a contact 10, closed only when the pawl 5 is in locking position, to a pin 3 screwed, into the barrel 1 which is insulated from the breech casing 2. Each projectile 4, Fig. 4, is provided with a propelling charge ignited by a fuze arranged in wire 19 mounted inside a cardboard sleeve 18. The wire connects the inside of one projectile to the outside of the next so that the current returns to battery by way of pawl 5. The projectiles are insulated from one another by paper insertions 16. The barrel is provided with a fireproof insulated packing ring 6 which bears on an insulated band on the projectile. The projectiles, which engage one another by readily disengageable ball connections 20, form a chain which is wound on a drum that carries the battery 23.
