Abstract
488,242. Depth gauges for drills &c. ROTERBERG, W. Aug. 18,1937, No. 22698. [Class 83 (iii)] A depth gauge for attachment to a drill, countersink, &c. is rotatable and axially adjustable relatively to the tool and is adapted to be either axially fixed relatively to the tool or slidable thereon. A housing d is axially adjustable on screw-threads on the shank a of the tool b and is locked in position by a nut m engaging wedges &c. k of soft material. A ring f is rotatably supported in the housing d by means of a ball thrust bearing e and a spring ring g and slidably receives a stop sleeve c for engagement with the work. The sleeve may be axially locked to the ring f, as shown, by means of a key i having a step i<1> engaging an annular recess f<1> in the ring and an axial slot c<3> in the sleeve, the compression of a spring h serving to prevent disengagement of the parts. A slot f<2> in the ring allows the key to be removed, in which case the spring h forces the sleeve against a shoulder b<2> on the tool. The sleeve then makes initial contact with the work and stops the feed when it engages the ring f, a large slot c<1> being provided for observation of the tool and smaller slots c<2> for clearing cuttings. The sleeve c may be made of several parts screwed together for adjustment of its length, and the tool b is screwed at b in the shank a.
