287,798. Villiers Engineering Co., Ltd., and Norton, W. A. Oct. 4, 1927. Piston packing. -To prevent the formation of carbon deposits in the packing-ring groove of an internal-combustion engine, a floating ring 5, which does not make contact with the cylinder wall, is placed above the packing-ring 4. The axial movements of the ring 5 due to inertia press the oil out of the packing- ring groove. The ring 5 may be placed below the ring 4, in which case it is made heavy, in order that its inertia, may be sufficient to overcome the friction between the ring 4 and the cylinder wall. Rotation of the ring 4 ma.y be prevented by a pin engaging a split in the ring.
