Abstract

A ladder stabilising device comprises a length of cable with a hook attachment means for fixing the base of a ladder to an anchor point. The cable is mounted on a reel which is housed in a metal or plastic box and attached to each of the stiles or uprights of a ladder. The cable may be wound onto the reel by a spring activated mechanism or by a manually operated handle. In use, the cable is extended from the reel, hooked onto a suitable anchor point, any slack cable taken up onto the reel and the reel locked to fix the cable in position. The fixed cable prevents slippage of the base of the ladder whilst in use.

Description

Idea for Ladder Safety bevice (Ladder Safety Mate) My idea is called
the ladder safety mate. It is a device that can be fitted to a ladder. It will incorporate a length of cable that will be secured to suitable anchor points. It will be used to ensure the stability of the ladder and to stop them slipping away from walls. (See diagram 1).

The ladder safety mate can be made in both automatic and manual versions. Two ladder safety mates will be required for each ladder, one on each upright. (See diagram 1).

The ladder safety mate can be fitted and removed easily to and from all types of ladders.

A permanent version can also be fitted.

Automatic and Manual Versions.

1. Automatic Version.

A length of cable will be wound around a retractable spring tensioned reel, (similar to the seotbelt system used in cars). It can be housed in a metal or plastic box. The cable will be made from metal coated in plastic or a strong fabric. A secondary locking device will be incorporated into the ladder safety mate to ensure the stability of the ladder. (See diagrams 2 and 3).

2. Manual Version.

The manual version will be made in the same way as the automatic version, apart from the reel. The reel will not use a retractable spring tensioned reel, it will instead be wound up and released using a lockable handle.

A closed hook/karabiner type fitting will be attached to the cable. When pulled open this hook will be attached to suitable anchor points, such as a closed hook in a wall or window frame etc. (See diagram 1).

I
