Description

This invention relates to a chill burns and scalds warning indicator Thermochromic pigments are currently known for their temperature colour changing capability and have been used more frequently in the production of mostly novelty products such as 'Comic Relief' noses printed Tee shirts using thermochromic inks and similar items.
The thermochromic pigments mentioned above have been solus or mixed with other permanent pigments polymers/monomers or in dyes used for fabric colours and printing. The above mentioned thermochromic related products are interesting but appear to action colour changes for colour change sake only and not to communicate temperature status information. Thermochromic pigments are temperarture activated and when mixed or used with a neutral polymer/monomer will visibly vanish on reaching their target temperature. According to this invention the manipulation of pigments combined with designs for special applications to provide an easy to use chill and scald warning device which is safe and reliable to use by the old the young the disabled and the by mothers for babies and infants and for normal healthy adults.
Thermochromic pigments require temperature change to action and ideally need good temperature conductors to fulfil their potential however polymers and momomers which offer the ideal medium for mixing with various permanent and thermochromic pigments in rigid or semi rigid or flexible but strong structures, are poor conductors of temperature. Careful design for a specific application is required to provide reliable temperature information products.
According to the present invention thermochromic pigments are selected by batch for specific temperature colour change actions. one colour action to provide a coldness or chill warning and a second identifiable colour for the safety water temperature range band, also a further colour to provide a scald warning these mentioned thermochromic pigments are then mixed with or without a permanent pigment including a volume of polymer or monomer for example P.V.C or Polypropylene etc. then injection or press moulded into the format of a water flotation disc or other geometric shape of various dimensions and cross sections as required for success in purpose of use.
The described device according to the present invention when placed into a body of water will float on or near the surface having a specific gravity of 1 or less to enable flotation providing a ready to view indication by colour of temperature allowing the observer to see if the body of water will potentially chill, scald or be satisfactory for bathing.

Claims (1)

  1. (1) Disc shaped or other non sharp geometric shape polymer or monomer device revealing by colour indication a quick and simple visual reference of the temperature status of a body of water by the action of two thermochromic pigments and a non active permanent pigment.
    (2) A device according to (1) of such geometric shape as to prevent cuts and swallowing by a child or an adult. First choice of shape as shown in diagram (A) disc of critical cross section as to prevent cuts and a diameter too wide for swallowing to comply with health & safety regulations.
    (3) Two or more active thermochromic pigments mixed and molded with a polymer or monomer according to (1) each pigment giving a specific temperature warning colour from chill warning below 24 Degrees C to scald warning above 42 Degrees C (3) Device to have a SG of 1 or less for flotation on surface of a body of water where uncirculated hot and cold water is at its highest temperature this is an original safety feature.
    (4) The device may potentially show relative to water temperature three or more different individual or mixed colours to give temperature warning or safe bathing status information. The preference colours are RED/PINK for hot and MAUVE/BLUE for cold though other thermochromic and fixed pigment colour combinations may be selected and other geometric variations may be manufactured and other target temperature thermochromic pigments mixed to provide a wide and diverse range of devices to suit the able and disabled the young and the old.
