Abstract

A strain relief cover for providing a radiation sealed connection between a data cable (1) and an associated connector (3) comprising a two-part fastoner including a second part (9) having a cylindrical cavity adapted to surround the data cable where the cable is attached to the connector, and a first part (7) having a pair of teeth (19) projecting therefrom adapted to fit snugly between the data cable and the cavity, and means (e.g. screws 11) for urging the first and second parts into close engagement around the data cable so as to squeeze the data cable where the cable is attached to the connector thereby forming a radiation seal between the data cable and the connector. <IMAGE>

Description

Data Cable Cover This invention relates in general to strain relief covey, and more particularly to a data cable strain relief cover providing a sealed connection between data cable. and their associated connector for preventing the emission of radiation therefrom.
Prior art cable fasteners and bushing are well known for connecting data cables to their associated connectors. Most such prior art connectors are fabricated from bacolite or netali:ed plastic. Such prior art fasteners are known to be susceptible to radiation leakage at the point of connection between the data cable and connector.
Various regulator authorities are beginning to establish maximum radiation leakage requirements for such connectors, and it is an object of the present invention to overcome the limitation of prior art connectors and comply with emerging radiation emission regulations According to the present invention, there is provided a two part data cable fastner incorporating mean for sealing the cable where it is attached to an associated connector, for substantially eliminating radiation leakage A description of the preferred embodiment is provided below with reference to the following drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a data cable attached to a connector via the cable fastener in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is an end view of the data cable fastener of the present invention in its assembled form; Figure 3 is a side view of the data cable fastener of Figure 2y Figure 4 is an end view of the data cable fastener of the present invention in it unassembled form: and Figure 5 is a side view of the data cable fastener of Figure 4.
Turning to Figure 1, z data cable I is shown connected to a connector 3 (such as an RS 233 connector) via the cable fastener 5 of the present invention Figures 2-5 illustrate the cable fastener in additional detail comprising a first portion 7 adapted to fit cooperatively with a second part 9. Accordingly, the fastener 5 is of two part construction, and ii preferably screwed together via a pair of screws (e.g.
screw 11 in Figure 1) on opposite side. of cable 1.
Nor particularly, the screw 11 extend through the two connecting parts 7 and 9 such that the parts effectively squeeze the cable.
The larger part 9 includes an annular indentation 13, as shown best with reference to Figures 3 and 5.
The indentation 13 is adapted to extend through a rear wall 15 of connector 3 such that a projecting portion 17 of the part 9 is disposed within the connector 3 and forms a strain relief stop to prevent disconnection of the fastener from connector 3.
According to an important aspect of the present invention, a pair of tongues or teeth 19 project from the smaller part 7 into the cylindrical cavity 21 formed within part 9. Preferably, the tongues or teeth 19 extend the full length of fastener 5.
The tongues or teeth 19 function to squeeze data cable 1 responsive to tightening of the screws 11. The effectively causes a radiation seal between the cable and connector 3.
other embodiments or modification of the invention are possible. All such modifications and embodiments are believed to be within the sphere and scope of the present invention as described herein.

CLAIMS:
1. A strain relief cover for providing a radiation sealed connaction between a data cable and an associated connector, comprising a two-part fastener including a first part having a cylindrical cavity adapted to surround said data cable where said cable is attached to said connector, and a second part having a pair of teeth projecting therefrom adapted to fit snugly between said data cable and said cavity, and mean for urging said first and second parts into close engagement around said data cable so as to squeeze the data cable where said cable is attached to said connector thereby forming a radiation eeal between said data cable and said connector
2. The strain relief cover of claim 1 wherein said first part further includes an annular indentation adapted to extend through a rear wall of said connector such that a portion of the first part is disposed within the connector forming a etrain relief stop for preventing disconnection of said fastener from the connector.
3. The strain relief cover of claim 1 or 2, wherein said means for urging comprises a pair of screws adapted to extend through cooperatively shaped threaded holes in said first and second parts, whereby said first and second parts may be screwed together around said data cable.
