Abstract

A storage pack locates over the top tube of a bicycle frame to provide compartments 1, 2 for accessories. Clamps 6 within the pack attach to the tube and are concealed in use by a lockable hinged side cover 10. <IMAGE>

Description

PEDAL CYCLE IMPROVEMENT Bicycles and their accessories (eg toolkits ,lights) are liable to be stolen or vandalised, and because of this many people are deterred from cycling and leaving their cycles unattended.
The saddlepack concept attempts to solve these problems - the most popular bicycle frame! the classic diamond forms the basis. The space between the top tube and the seat and down tubes can be utilised to accommodate a narrow aerodynamic storage pack known as the saddlepack which is 60mum wide (approx) Preferably the pack is made from pre-formed injection-moulded plastic and the fitting is very straightforward. The side panel is opened and the pack aligned or, the top and seat tubes eg by guides incorporated in the moulding. It is then held in place by three U-bolts securing it to the top tubes the side panel is then lowered and the saddlepack is then ready for use.
The side panel can be hinged upwards and locked in place with a lock mechanism at the base of the pack.
This also allows the pump (which on many bikes fits in parallel with the seat tube) to be locked in place.
The saddlepack can be manufactured in different sizes ,shapes, colours, and internal layouts so as to suit any requirement and any size of frame. The pack is compartmentalised so as to allow a range of accessories to be 'plugged' in as and when required.
These accesssories can include a tool kit, a rechargeable battery modules and a wheel locking system (see page 3 for a description of one version of the saddlepack).
The saddlepack is a simple solution to a major problem. It allows the rider to store essential items and gives the manufacturer a base for a whole series of spin-offs.
A DESCIPION OF AN ADVANCED VERSION OF THE SADDLEPACK: TYPE OF BICYCLE- A racer.
SIZE OF PACK- Dependent on bicycle frame - 2/3 of the space between the down and seat tubes.
PUMP- Held in place when the side panel is closed - totally secure.
BATTERIES AND LIGHTS- So as to allow the front and rear lights to be bolted to the frame, a rechargeable battery pack- can be fitted inside the saddlepack directly above the lock mechanism. R small low voltage indicator can be mounted in a console on the top of the pack and the light switch can be hidden away behind the side panel.
TOOLKIT- This is the largest space in the saddlepack and can accommodate any tool required by the rider. These tools are held in a bag and it in turn are held secure by adjustable velcro straps.
CLOCE/STOPWATCH- On the console, next to the battery indicator a simple clock/stopwatch can be fitted; mounted from the inside with screws it would be very difficult to steal.
LOCKING SYSTEM- Next to the toolkit compartment, a steel cable could be fitted so as to pass through the rear wheel and lock itself in a small mechanism in the side panel. It could be released with a key.
This final option would be expensive and a cheaper method would be to carry a normal bicycle lock in the tool compartment.
