Abstract

The present publication describes a wall-paper which comprises a paper layer (2), a layer of printing colour (3) placed on the paper layer (2), and a protective layer applied onto the layer of printing colour (3). In order to facilitate the wallpapering, the bottom face of the paper layer (2) is provided with an adhesive layer (1) that can be activated in a suitable way, e.g., by means of heat, and the wallpaper paper is ready marked, perforated or cut in the transverse direction at appropriate distances. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An improved wall covering The present invention is concerned with a wall-paper in accordance with the preamble of claim 1.

Thus, such a wall-paper usually comprises a layer of paper, a layer of printing colour on the layer of paper, as well as a film layer preferably protecting the said layers, which film layer may be, e.g., a plastic film.

Wallpapering is even to-day a relatively laborious and complicated item of work. It comprises several steps of work, and if one wishes to perform the work well, it is necessary, besides the wall-papers and the paste, also to acquire the necessary special tools, such as wallpaper brushes, cutters, plumb lines, paste brushes, and rulers.

Wallpapering includes, e.g., the following steps: -emptying of the room to be papered or covering of the furniture and providing of space for working, -preparation of the paste, -measuring of the width of the walls to be papered in order to estimate the consumption of wall-paper, ---cutting of the wall-paper to appropriate lengths out of the roll, -pasting of the wallpaper length, -allowing the paper length to become wet, and fixing of the paper length onto the wall.

In particular, the cutting of the wall-paper into appropriate lengths and the fixing of these lengths onto the wall may often be quite troublesome. This is the case in particular in the case of a wall-paper that, owing to its pattern, must be matched togteher with the adjoining paper lengths alternatingly or evenly. In addition to the circumstance that the cutting of the wall-paper at the correct point perpendicularly is, in such a case, problematic and often makes the working slow, it may also ruin the entire working result if it is performed unsuccessfully.

The paste necessary for fixing the wallpaper lengths must, as a rule, be prepared on the day preceding the use. In certain cases, it may be difficult to prepare a paste of correct quality suitable for each wall-paper type, and so also to spread the paste evenly onto the paper. The use of paste may also readily cause soiling.

However, it is one of the greatest drawbacks of present-day wallpapering, besides those mentioned above, that the consumer must buy the wall-paper as blind, i.e.

on buying the roll of wall-paper, he cannot know certainly how many metres of finished wall he obtains from it, and therefore he buys too little or too much of wall-paper.

The object of the present invention is to eliminate the drawbacks related to the priorart wall-papers and to provide a wall-paper of an entirely novel type, whose cutting and fixing onto the wall cause no problems.

The invention is based thereon that the wall-paper, which comprises a paper layer, a printing colour layer, and a possible protective layer, is provided with an adhesive layer applied onto the paper layer, which adhesive layer can be activated in a suitable way.

Another characteristic of the invention is that the wall-paper is, right at the factory, provided either with markings of the cutting lines, whereat the wallpaper can be cut easily along the markings, or with perforations at corresponding lines, whereat wallpaper lengths of appropriate size can be separated from each other by tearing along the perforation. According to the invention, the wall-papers may also be cut into appropriate lengths right at the factory.

More specifically, the wall-paper in accordance with the invention is characterized in what is stated in the characterizing section of claim 1.

By means of the invention, remarkable advantages are obtained. Thus, -the consumer can buy exactly the required quantity of wall-paper or wallpaper lengths, -no special tools are required for papering, -no separate adhesives are required, because the adhesive is present on the wallpaper, -the problem of cutting the wallpaper at the correct point and perpendicularly is avoided, -no spreading of paste is required (only activation), so that there is no risk of soiling, and -no wetting time is required.

The invention will be examined below in more detail with reference to the attached drawings.

Figure 1 is a sectional view of a simplified design of the wali-paper.

Figure 2 is a schematical presentation of a wall-paper to be matched alternatingly.

Figure 3 is a schematical presentation of a wall-paper that can be matched freely.

Figure 4 is a schematical presentation of a wall-paper to be matched evenly.

The composition of the wall-pper of the example case was as follows: On one side of the paper layer 2 there was a layer 1 consisting of adhesive activated by heat, and on the other side there was a layer of printing colour 3. In order to protect the layers of printing colour and paper, there was a protective layer 4 consisting of a plastic film, in this particular case of polyvinylacetate (PVAC), on the layer of printing colour 3.

Figs. 2 to 4 show the locations of the cutting lines marked on the wall-paper in accordance with the invention in the different cases. The wall-paper shown in Fig. 2 is a socalled type to be matched alternatingly, i.e.

therein the cutting lines have been marked so that the pattern of each length is a mirror image of the preceding length. When lengths that are placed in the roll one after the other are fixed onto the wall side by side, thereby a continuous pattern is obtained. The wall-paper of Fig. 3 is a type that can be matched freely, and the cutting lines 5' are marked thereon so that the distances between them are always equal. The wall-paper shown in Fig. 4 is of the type to be matched evenly, and cutting lines 5" are marked so that all the lengths are identical both regarding their length and regarding their pattern. In the place of the markings of cutting lines in the roll, in the cases mentioned above, there may also be ready perforations, or the lengths may be ready-cut at the correct positions.

The papering by means of the wall-paper in accordance with the present invention takes place as follows: The consumer buys the wall-paper that he desires by the length so that he has calculated his requirement of wall-papers on the basis of his old wall-papers present on the walls.

The consumer receives either ready-cut lengths, rolls on which the cutting lines have been marked, or rolls with perforations, each of the said rolls containing several lengths.

Out of the room to be provided with wallpapers, the furniture is shifted off the walls and paintings etc. are removed from the walls. The paper lengths are cut at the cutting lines by means of scissors, by tearing along the perforation, or ready-cut paper lengths are used. Hereinafter, the adhesive provided on the wall-paper, in itself known, is activated by means of heat at the upper end (e.g., by means of a radiator, hair dryer, flatiron).

The paper lengths are placed on the wall vertically with their upper ends fixed to the wall, it is checked that the lengths are at their correct positions, and the rest of the adhesive on the paper lengths is activated by means of heat, and the wallpaper lengths are ironed into contact with the wall. Any excess lengths are cut off.

Within the scope of the invention, it is also possible to conceive solutions differing from the exemplifying embodiment described above. Thus, as adhesive, it is also possible to use adhesives activated by other means except heat, e.g., adhesives activated by means of water.

Claims

1. Wall-paper, which comprises -a layer of paper (2), -a layer of printing colour (3) placed on the layer of paper (2), and -possibly a protective layer (4) applied onto the layer of printing colour (3), characterized in that -the bottom face of the paper layer (2) is provided with a layer of adhesive (1), which can be activated in a suitable way, and -the wall-paper is ready marked, perforated or cut in the transverse direction at appropriate distances in order to facilitate the wallpapering.

2. Wall-paper as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the adhesive agent in the adhesive layer (1) is an adhesive agent in itself known and activated by means of heat.

3. Wall-paper as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the adhesive agent in the adhesive layer (1) is an adhesive agent in itself known and activated by means of water.
