Abstract
A heating device for use in domestic appliances such as egg boilers and coffee percolators, comprises a plate- like P.T.C, resistance heating element 2 adapted for operation at a mains voltage of 220 V with equal heat discharge from each side of the heating element wherein, in order to emit in operation a heat power of more than 50 watts per square centimetre of the surface of said element, the element has a thickness in the range of from 0.5 to 2 mm, and said P.T.C. material has a resistivity at its Curie temperature and at an electrical field strength of 2000 volts/cm in the range of from 10<3> ohms.cm to 6.10<3> ohms. cm. The Curie temperature is at least 50 DEG K higher than the maximum normal operating temperature of the medium being heated. As shown, the element 2 is contained in a recess of a metal container body 1, the recess being closed by a metal plug 11 which is a push fit or a screw fit therein. Thermally conductive insulating layers 212, 222 cover the forces of the element 2 and ductile metal layers 412, 422 even out the pressure exerted on the element 2. A similar P.T.C. plate heating element may be sandwiched between the opposed flat surfaces of two fluid flow chambers of a coffee percolator. <IMAGE>
