Abstract

A hydraulic actuator (14) for a drum brake has a piston (36) slidably mounted within a bore (32) on the hydraulic actuator (14) and pressurized fluid communicated to the bore (32) acts against the piston (36) to move the piston and pair of brake shoes. A partition (44) is also disposed within the bore (32) to substantially define a secondary chamber (48) which receives pressurized fluid from the bore. The partition (44) is movably disposed within the bore (32) and resiliently engaged with the piston (36) so that increased pressure within the bore is transmitted to the piston via the partition and the resilient engagement (46). Moreover, the partition (44) controls venting of the secondary chamber (48) so that upon contact of the associated brake shoe(s) with a drum, backlash or retraction of the brake shoe(s) is limited. <IMAGE>
