Abstract

24,253. Droitcour, M. A. Oct. 19. Printing-surfaces such as electrotype shells are given gradations to obviate the use of an overlay by forcing the same by means of fluidpressure into contact with a positive underlay, the pressure being preferably applied to a molten backing, which sets and causes the printing - surface to retain the desired form. Backings may be attached in the same way to printing-surfaces with plane surfaces, a plane surface replacing the underlay. As shown, an electrotype shell S, Fig. 5, formed with margin spaces on which a frame C is placed, is placed upon a positive underlay U, and after molten metal or the like M is poured on the back of the shell it is pressed into contact with the underlay surface U by means of compresed air or other fluid introduced by a pipe p on a platen P, which forms an air-tight joint with the frame C. The surface S may be submitted to fluid pressure before applying the backing. The backing is preferably trimmed off after it has set with the surface S still in contact with the underlay, and the margins of the combined plate are trimmed off in the usual way. A celluloid or like backing may be employed.
